Cant Miss 79 Short Essays on Design and Beautiful Illustrations

This week while reading through the post in the Swiss-Miss Blog I saw this book. I have not seen it at any local book stores, but I know that I will be looking for it the next time I am out shopping. It was written by Michael Bierut who is a designer himself. I think that any designer out there who is still looking for some guidance in this industry would learn at least one or two things that could help them.

I don't know about anyone else in my class, but I am obsessed with illustrations right now. I am not sure if it is the fact that I am not very good at them and would love to learn more or the fact that they can be gorgeous art. I found this article on smashingmagzine.com and it is just a large collection of great illustrations. This is really fun to look at and can give your idea on things to try when doing your next design. I hope that you all enjoy look at it as much as I did. Click here to see the whole article.

Here are some of my favs:

  1. I am also obsessed with illustrations, but it is definitely because I can't really do them yet. First, I think illustrations are really "in Vogue" right now. I feel like every time I turn around, I see these neat graphic posters or invitations on Etsy. Even just walking around campus, I love seeing the illustrations created for upcoming events that were designed at the Design Center in the Department of Student Life. Although illustrations/Illustrator remains much of a mystery, I think it is also intriguing because the skills are still within reach, so we continue to seek out articles like this one you have posted. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Like you and Andrea, I LOVE illustrations. Working with Illustrator at least once a week (to see what techniques I can stumble upon) is one of my goals for this semester. I will not tell you how I am doing with that. BUT, I agree with Andrea that it is neat to think how many illustration tools are within our reach. I love the illustrations you picked out for this post. (I really want to know how the second one was made.) The two illustrations are very different in style, but both show so much thought and detail. I am intimidated when thinking about what it takes to create these illustrations, but hopefully, one day, we will all be able pull of something just as amazing.
